Memorial to Major Roberdeau Wheat, June 27, 2004
On Sunday, June 27, 2004, the 12th Virginia
Infantry, Company B (which also does an impression of the 1st Louisiana
Special Battalion, "Wheat's Tigers") honored the memory of
Major Chatham Roberdeau Wheat on the 142nd anniversary of his death
at the Battle of Gaines Mill. An honor guard was formed in Hollywood
Cemetery in Richmond, Virginia, and marched to Major Wheat's gravesite.
A brief sketch of his life was read, and then a memorial wreath was
placed. Two poems, "Bury Me On The Field, Boys", and "Poem
for Confederate Memorial Day" were recited, and the company fired
a salute.
The 12th Virginia offers a special thanks
to Russ Riter, who organized this tribute to Major Wheat.
