The Grays Quick Step
The Grays Quick Step was composed in 1850 by William
A. Marks, and dedicated to the captain of the Petersburg Grays, Joseph
V. Scott.
Joseph V. Scott served as captain of the Petersburg
Grays, 1847-1860. In April, 1861 he was elected captain of the Cockade
Rifles, which became Company E, 3rd Regiment of Virginia Volunteers (1861-1865).
He was promoted to major on November 6, 1861, to lieutenant colonel on
April 27, 1862, and was mortally wounded on June 30, 1862.
